The isle of Capri has two communes: Capri and Anacapri. The origin
of the name Capri, according to M. Andren, can go back to the Latin "Capreae"
(island of the goats) or to the kapros"(from Greek "island of
the wild boars); while the Anacapri voice comes from Greek, Ana' kapros
and means "Goats of over". Capri's population is 12,500 spread in
the two communes, called Capresi. It is sourrounded & bathed from the
Mar Tirreno, it is geografic situated between the parallels 40°30' 40 ''
and between meridians 14°11' 54' ' and 14°16' 19 '' East of Greewich.
Distant 35 from the Neapolitan coasts and connected to the peninsula
sorrentina from a submarine rocks extension along 5 Km. With its limestone
cliff covers a territory of 10,36 Kmq, the rocky coasts is moslty high and
offer many grottoes; the highest part of the island is the Solaro mount
that arrives to 586 mt. The climate is moderated and humid, therefore the
850 species of plants with over 133 varieties and vary kind of palms from
dates to carob trees, mirto, lauro, ginestre, wild finocchietto, capers,
and above all, Mediterranean spot. The fauna, instead, is rather
insufficient. Wild rabbits can be found, merlons, some hawk, very many
gulls and the rare blue lizard that it exclusively lives on the
Faraglioni. The easily way to get on Capri island is embarking on the
ferries from the port of Naples, or from Sorrento and Castellammare. In
any case the disembarking is in Marina Grande on the North of the island.
When arrived You can choose to take a nice walk up to Capri and Anacapri,
with taxi, service bus or in Funicular reaching the famouse Piazzetta of
Capri.
